Training tower open house – is scheduled April 12 from noon until 4 p.m. at the facility at the county fairgrounds. The event will include tours of the tower and training demonstrations. No burns will be conducted at the open house.
April highway cleanup – Residents are encouraged to volunteer for the cleanup effort, sponsored by Pillow Talk Motel in Wellington and Riverside Motel in Helper. For time and schedule information, contact Harry Sturdy at 637-7706, extension 122.
Letter carriers food drive – Carriers will collect bagged, non-perishable food donations May 10. Residents may place bags beside mailboxes or take food items to any post office. Donations will be distributed to the local food banks.
Rape crisis hotline – Rape or domestic violence victims may contact the local 24-hour crisis line toll-free at 1-866-894-8610.
UP&L retirees – A meeting for all UP&L retirees in the Carbon-Emery area is planned April 9 at 10 a.m. at the board of education building in Price. Insurance and benefits will be discussed. For information, call Pat Sloan at 472-5422 or contact Madeline Tonc.
Helper spring cleanup – City crews will pick up branches, shrubs and yard/garden debris from April 1 to April 25 according to an established schedule. Crews will not backtrack. Branches must be cut in four-foot lengths, then stacked off the roadways and sidewalks. The schedule includes:
Through April 4, Castle Gate subdivision, 1st through 5th Avenue, Martin, Orchard Street, 1st through 11th North and Bryner Street.
April 7 to April 11, west Helper.
April 14 to April 18, east Helper.
April 21 to April 25, Locust, Maple, Poplar and Main Street as well as south Highway 6.
Food handlers classes – Two-hour sessions will be offered April 16 and May 14 at the health district in Price at 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Classes will be taught April 17 and May 15 at the health department in Castle Dale at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Test fees required. Stress management seminar – Vet Center representative Brent Price will present the seminar for veterans and spouses April 10 from noon to 1 p.m. in room 256 at the workforce services office in Price.
HEAT – The federally funded energy assistance program has been extended to April 30. Contact the HEAT office at 613-0100.
Carbon County Food Bank – Hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday from noon until 4 p.m. For information on volunteering, donating or applying, contact Dondra Nance at 637-9232.
Parenting for teens – The Family Support and Children’s Justice Center in Price offers a free class dealing with the issues, problems and difficulties facing teen parents. Participants learn about resources, assistance to return/remain in school, parenting/life skills, and recreation opportunities. Contact Terry Willis at 637-0281.
Lifeline pregnancy assistance, support center – The facility offers free confidential pregnancy testing, verification, counseling and baby supplies. Residents may contact the center by calling the 24-hour telephone line at 636-0700.
Carbon County Animal Shelter – AVID chip pet identification is available at the shelter. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Foster parents – The local DCFS office needs foster parents willing to work with teens and provide emergency shelter care. For information, contact Cindy Saccomanno at 636-0219.
Helper library – Hours are Monday through Wednesday from noon until 8 p.m.; Thursday from noon to 6 p.m.; Friday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.; closed Saturday and Sunday. For information, contact the library at 472-5601.
Price library – Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.; closed Sunday. Story hour is Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Thursday at 1 p.m. Children may stop by, view chick eggs in an incubator and enter to win prizes. The Scholastic Book fair is planned April 21-26. Family Support & Children’s Justice Center – offers crisis care for families with children from infants to 11 years old. Crisis nursery is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Families may use the nursery for respite, family crisis, court, doctors appointments, medical emergencies, mental health appointments, escaping family violence, attending parenting classes/divorce classes and AA/Narcotic Anonymous meetings. Child Care Resource & Referral – offers information on becoming child care providers and referrals for parents, employees or employers needing related services. Call the agency at 613-5619.
Helper mining museum – From Oct. 1 to April 30, hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. From May 1 to Sept. 30, hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tours may be scheduled. For information, contact Helen Tonc at 472-3009.

Habitat for Humanity – is accepting applications for a home in the Wellington area. Deadline is April 15. For information, call the Habitat office at 636-3230 .
Cancer screening – Southeastern Utah Health District in Price offers checks twice a month for women up to and including age 64. Clinics include breast, pelvic and pap exams at low or no cost. Women 50 to 64 may qualify for free mammogram vouchers. Call the health district at 637-3671 for appointments.
Infant immunization clinics – The health district in Price offers the clinics Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
ABC Learning Center – has books, computers and activities for adults and children. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For tutoring appointments, call the center at 888-2061.
