The Carbon High track and field team traveled to Emery High school last Tuesday to compete in the final state qualifying meet of the regular season. The team fared quite well and now look forward to hosting the Region 8 finals meet this Wednesday and Thursday.
Isaac Goodrich kicked things off by competing in the 3200 meter run. The Dino athlete finished in first place and was ahead of the second place runner by about 150 yards.
Goodrich also competed in the 1600 meter run and completed the event with a second place finish.
Joe Palmer placed first in the 200 meter run while Jacob Perez placed fifth in the 400 meter event.
Byran Stewart finished in first place in the 110 meter hurdles and placed second in the 300 meter hurdles.
Perry Laulu collected gold in the shotput with a personal best throw of 47 feet. Laulu also placed second in the discus competition.
Lee Prettyman finished in first place in the javelin and second in the discus event.
Carbon assistant coach, Stewart Foster explained that Jacob Burrows ran away from the field to place first in the 800 meter run.
Foster also explained that Melanie Madsen got back in stride by winning both the 3200 and 1600 meter events. Madsen was followed by Elizabeth Brookes and Brittany Horrocks in the 3200 meter run and Jana Burrows rounded things off by placing third in the 1600 meters.
Cora Broadbear ran to a fourth place finish in the 400 meter run while Amie Stewart placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.
Stewart also won the long jump event with Maquette Potts finishing in fourth place. Potts also competed in the 800 meter run and took home first place honors in the event.
Andrew Newby ran her best time and placed second in the 200 meter run.
In the shotput competition, Marsha Jensen had a personal best throw and came in third place.
The Dino girls dominated the high jump event as they captured the first four places. Jessica Serfistini led the way and was followed by Potts, Newby and Brittany Banning.
Last Saturday, the Dinos traveled to Brigham Young University to compete in an invitational which hosted every school in Utah and several schools from surrounding states.
Goodrich led the way for the Dinos by finishing 11th overall in the 3200 meter run. During the event, Goodrich beat the state qualifying time by 14 seconds and finished the run with a time of 9:48. Only a few yards separated fourth through 11th place.
In the 800 meter event, Terry placed fifth. Coach Foster explained that Terry did not compete at 100 percent because of illness, but the outcome was quite pleasing.
Prettyman finished the javelin competition in sixth place overall.
Dino’s head coach Ellias Perez was quick to add his compliments toward those who competed, despite placing in the event.
“Palmer looked good in the sprints while Amie Stewart and her brother Bryan both ran well in the hurdle events. Laulu also performed well in the throwing events while Madsen rounded into form in the middle distance events,” explained Perez.
Next on the Dinos agenda is the region track meet which will take place May 7 at 3p.m. and May 8 at 10 a.m.
