The East Carbon Lady Vikings basketball team continues to compete against any and all Region 18 teams as the season rapidly moves on into it’s final stretch.
The most recent games the Vikings competed in took place last week as the team set off for a week of road match ups.
The first competitor for the Vikes was the Meridian Mongooses. The East Carbon team came out strong as the team lead the Mongooses, 10-8 by the end of the first quarter of play.
As the second quarter got underway, the Vikings continued to dominate the court as they outscored Meridian, 13-7 in the quarter, thus leading to East Carbon’s 23-15 lead at the half.
The Mongooses came out fighting in the second half as the team pressed East Carbon at both ends of the court. The Vikes held on strong however as they maintained their lead up to the final buzzer.
By the time the intense action was over, the Vikings had defeated Meridian, 50-42 to capture their fifth win of the Region 18 season.
East Carbon junior, Nickole Larson lead the team in scoring with 15 points. She was followed by Chelsey Timothy who scored 14 and Brittnie Leonard who finished the game with 12 points.
After defeating the Meridian team, the Vikings moved on to compete in yet another road game. This time, it would be against the Altamont Longhorns.
The Thursday afternoon game kicked off with the Vikings falling apart on the court against the Altamont team.
The first quarter was nothing but offense on the part of the Longhorns as they outscored East Carbon, 25-8 in the quarter.
The second quarter then played out much like the first as East Carbon was outscored, 21-10 from the field.
At the half, the Vikings were down, 46-18. Quite a deficit to have to face as the second half kicked off.
As the teams returned to the hardwood floor, East Carbon continued to play weak as they scored only four points in the third quarter.
Things continued to go wrong for the Vikings in the fourth as they managed to only score nine points in the quarter.
The disappointing game ended as the Vikings fell to the Longhorns by the final score of 66-31.
Timothy took on the role as the leading scorer for the Vikings as she completed the game with 12 points.
Only five East Carbon players managed to post figures on the board including Timothy. Misty Valdez scored eight, Joyce Clark finished with five and Larson and Donna Turner each scored three points for the Vikings.
The East Carbon team was scheduled to take on West Deseret this past Tuesday night, but the game was canceled. Instead, both the Vikings boys and girls teams were slated to take on the team Wednesday afternoon.
The girls will continue action Thursday night on their home court as they host Wasatch Academy at 6 p.m.
With the last half of the season at hand, the Vikings look forward to bettering their current 5-13 overall record in order to be strong competitiors in the state finals later this year.
