The College of Eastern Utah’s baseball team opened up the season at home this past week. The Eagles played for the first time on their home field Friday and Saturday against Ricks College. Despite only winning one out of four games, the Eagles were pleased to step out before a home crowd and kick off the season on their own field.
The four game weekend took off during a cold and windy Friday afternoon. Despite horrible weather conditions, the players continued to compete. In the first of the double header games played Friday, the Eagles stepped out swinging, leading the Ricks College Vikings by four runs heading into the fourth inning.
The fourth inning however turned out to be a struggle for the Eagles. With the Vikings evening up the score with four points, including one home run, the Eagles found themselves in trouble. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the momentum did not change in their direction, with the Vikings dominating the remainder of the game, and walking away with the 8-4 victory.
Although the weather was bitter cold, the teams played the second of the double header as well. The Eagles once again failed to turn the tide and lost the Vikings 4-0.
Following a day of rugged weather, the Vikings and Eagles returned to the field on Saturday to compete under warmer conditions.
The Eagles found themselves on both ends of the score board following the double header, with the Eagles losing 4-1, and then winning 7-5.
Jacob Wolfgramm had an outstanding weekend for the Eagles. Wolfgramm hit one double and a triple in the Eagles rally to defeat the Vikings. Wolfgramm’s batting average is .400.
The Eagles pitchers seem to be struggling somewhat. Joldy Watts, who is a returning sophomore for the Eagles this season, pitched five innings this past weekend, allowing 12 hits, and five runs. The season is young however, and Watts will find his niche soon and that will boost the Eagles.
CEU struggled to make it to base at times this weekend. The Eagles ran only 12 times on 26 hits. Errors also plagued the home team. The Eagles finished the four game stand with 21 errors, compared to the Vikings eight.
The Eagles record stands currently at 6-16, in all games played, including pre season. Although the Eagles are not currently considered a winning team, the upcoming weeks will find the team competing for bragging rights.
After rough edges are smoothed, and the team finds their game, the Eagles will be a strong Scenic West Athletic Conference team that should finish strong this season.
The Eagles will return to action this weekend, as they travel to Idaho to face the North Idaho Cardinals, Friday and Saturday. The team will compete in four games and hopefully, the errors will be reduced and the standing will be improved.
