The College of Eastern Utah hosted yet another home game this past weekend. The team welcomed the Southern Idaho Golden Eagles, who have been competing quite strong this season. The match up was a true test for the Eagles, who have struggled throughout the season against several Scenic West Athletic Conference teams. This weekend was no different, with CEU winning only one out of four games played.
In the first of the double header games, the Eagles were blown away by the Idaho team, 13-3. Although the hometown Eagles lost, the teams confidence was unweathered.
Eastern Utah returned to the field in the second game swinging well. The Eagles managed to put a win under their belts, 4-3. The win was the sixth for the Eagles this season against SWAC teams.
The following day, the two teams hit the fields once again to compete in a double header. The Eagles held their own against the Idaho team, however losing both games.
The first game found the Eagles pressuring Southern Idaho. The Eagles defense stepped up a notch and gave a good showing on Saturday. The Eagles were defeated however in the first of the double header games, 4-2.
The games were close and CEU felt as if they could put the Idaho team away in the second game. This did not prevail however, with CEU losing 7-6.
The Eagles have struggled so far this season to rack up many wins. This fact is definitely not because the team lacks talent. In fact, this years Eagle ball club posses extraordinary talent.
Eagles catcher, Derek Waddoups has not only done well on defense, but also at hitting. Waddoups brings a lot of power to bat and can knock nearly any ball for a good distance. Jacob Wolfgramm has also done a great job for the Eagles at bat. Wolfgramm, along with Kory Drew have been a dominating force at bat for the Eagles. Drew’s batting average is currently .335 and continues to increase as the season progresses.
Despite struggling through the season, the Eagles look forward to their upcoming games. The team will hit the road this week as the travel to St. George to take on the Dixie Rebels, who are currently ranked number on in the SWAC. This may be the biggest challenge for the Eagles this season.
