Katie Capalbo has stepped up for the Dino soccer team during the preseason. In a game played last week, Capalbo scored two goals against Granite which helped the Dinos win the non-region game, 3-0. |
The Carbon High Dinos girls soccer team kicked things off last Thursday as the team competed in its first game of the preseason.
To start things off, the Dinos traveled to northern Utah to compete against Granger. While the temperatures soared to nearly 100 degrees, the girls played strong and did not give up despite the incredible heat.
Andraya Newby got the ball rolling for Carbon when she scored 30 seconds into the game. This would take the Dinos to a 1-0 halftime lead over the hosting team.
The second half also found Carbon on top of their game as Katie Capalbo scored midway into the half. The Dinos easily defeated Granger 2-1.
As the Dinos continue to prepare for the regular season, the team once again traveled to compete in a preseason game. This time, Carbon faced Granite in a game which was played under similar weather conditions.
Carbon lead at the half 1-0 after Capalbo scored late in the half.
Coach Dave Capalbo explains that “Julie Swinburne got her first goal of the year as she gathered up a rebound about 30 yards out and boomed a high arcing shot over an out of position goalie.”
Capalbo got her second goal of the game on another fast break for a 3-0 final score.
Although Carbon is a young team who has very little soccer experience, the team has offered strong competition thus far into the preseason. If the past two games are a preview of things to come, Carbon just may be at the top of the soccer standings this season.
“Even though most of these players are beginners, we have speed at every position. They still make mistakes from inexperience, but they are making the transition from playing defense to an immediate fast break, which is a constant threat,” explained coach Capalbo.
The Dinos will continue preparing for the regular season which begins Aug. 29 by competing in several preseason games including a game scheduled to take place Aug. 21 on the CEU field at 3:30 p.m.
