Green River and the Black Dragon Pictograph
No day trip would be complete without a drive down to Green River and a visit to the John Wesley Powell Museum.
A quick sidetrip to a day would be a visit to the Black Dragon Pictograph, about 17 miles east of Green River just off I-70.
What can I see and do?
With the emphasis on the Green River, its tributaries and the history of its exploration, the John Wesley Powell Museum offers one of the best ways to understand the geology and geography of the Colorado Plateau.
There are displays of early river craft, excerpts from journals of early explorers and an excellent video presentation.
The gift shop at the museum in Green River city houses one of the better selections of guide books and regional histories currently available.
From April 1 through Oct. 31, the facility in Green River is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., excluding Sunday.
From Nov. 1 through March 21, the museum’s hours switch to 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Green River State Park which is located on the bank of the river is an oasis with tall cottonwood trees shading manicured lawns.
A favorite embarkation point for river trips through Labyrinth and Stillwater canyons. The 53-acre park serves as a good base for seeing much of southeastern Utah.
Green River State Park is the beginning point for the annual 180-mile Friendship Cruise which sets boats asail down the long river route.
Facilities include a 42-unit campground, hot showers, modern restrooms, a group-use pavilion, an amphitheater for interpretive programs and a boat launching ramp.

A top-notch nine-hole course with meandering fairways, lakes and traps is challenging and fun for all levels of golfers.
Green River State Park is open all year and reservations are accepted from March 15 to Oct. 15. Stay limit is 14 days.
Several pictographs are found at the Black Dragon site, part of the San Rafael Swell. There are numerous sites on the Swell but the Black Dragon pictograph and the canyon that houses it is close and worth the short jaunt.
How do I get there?
Take I-70 West from Green River for 17 miles. Once a traveler passes mile marker 145, watch for a wire gate on the right. This is not an off-ramp and is not posted. Follow the dirt road through the gate on the right and travel to the Black Dragon sign. Turn west up a steep-walled canyon until a wooden fence comes into view.
What is the driving time?
It takes about an hour to get to Green River from Price. The 60 miles is easy, but traffic is often heavy, especially on weekends. Plan for a good hour or 90 minute journey.
