Rape crisis hotline – Rape or domestic violence victims in the Carbon-Emery County area may contact the local 24-hour crisis line toll-free at 1-866-894-8610.
Free basic computer training – A five-week course will start May 17 at 6:15 p.m. at the ABC Learning Center in East Carbon. For information, contact the center at 888-2061.

CASA – Court appointed special advocates are trained community volunteers appointed by judges to speak for children appearing in court. Screenings are conducted on all volunteers. For information, call CASA coordinator Tarasina Compagni at 636-3431.
Frontier project – is looking for clean, used clothing for families and children in need. To donate, contact the project at 637-1497.
Carbon County Triad – meets the first Wednesday of the month at 2 p.m. at Price senior center. Members focus on law enforcement and aging programs to assist the elderly. Meetings are open to the public.
Carbon County RSVP – Volunteers ages 55 year and older are needed. Mileage reimbursement and liability insurance provided. For information, contact the RSVP office at 637-9118.
Lifeline pregnancy assistance, support center – The facility offers free confidential pregnancy testing, verification, counseling and baby supplies. Residents may contact the center by calling the 24-hour telephone line at 636-0700.
Cans for Care-A-Van – The service is conducting an aluminum can drive to help defray the costs of providing transportation to medical appointments for the elderly and people with disabilities. Bagged cans may be dropped off at Howa’s. For pickup, call the office at 637-9488.
Carbon County Humane Society – The non-profit organization offers monthly spay and neuter clinics at 98 North Carbon Avenue in Price. The group needs old towels and blankets. Members will pick up good used items for the group’s rummage sale. For information, call the humane society at 637-2908.
Carbon County Animal Shelter- AVID chip pet identification is available at the shelter. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Carbon County Housing Authority – The office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The children’s library is open to housing residents Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.
Foster parents – The local DCFS office needs foster parents willing to work with teens and provide emergency shelter care. For information, contact Cindy Saccomanno at 636-0219.

Single mothers support group – meets Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Price Community Center. Child care available upon request.
Helper library – Hours are Monday through Wednesday from noon until 8 p.m.; Thursday from noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.; closed Friday, Sunday and daily from 2:30 to 3 p.m. For information, contact the library at 472-5601.
Price library – Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; closed Saturday and Sunday. The library is sponsoring free summer reading programs for preschool to third grade students and fourth to ninth graders. The used book sale and silent auction are slated May 31 and June 3-7 at Price Peace Garden. The library will be closed for inventory during the events. Story hour is Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Thursday at 1 p.m. Children Pet Pals activities are Tuesday from 5 to 5:30 p.m. For information, call library at 636-3188.
CEU library -Hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Break hours vary. For information, contact the library at 613-5209.
Family Support & Children’s Justice Center – offers crisis care for families with children from infants to 11 years old. Crisis nursery is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Families may use the nursery for respite, family crisis, court, doctors appointments, medical emergencies, mental health appointments, escaping family violence, attending parenting classes/divorce classes and AA/Narcotic Anonymous meetings. Child Care Resource & Referral – offers information on becoming child care providers and referrals for parents, employees or employers needing related services. For information, contact the agency at 613-5619.
Women’s cancer support group – meets the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Castleview’s classroom Located in room 104, the cancer library is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For information, contact Sherry King at 637-4800, extension 3510.
Helper mining museum – From May 1 to Sept. 30, hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. From Oct. 1 to April 30, hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours may be scheduled. For information, contact Helen Tonc at 472-3009.
Prehistoric museum – From April 1 to Oct. 31, hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. From Nov. 1 to March 31, hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For information, call the museum at 613-5060.
Habitat for Humanity – Application deadline for homes being constructed in Castle Dale is June 30. Sweat equity, monthly mortgage and escrow payments as well as the willingness to partner with habitat for the term of a loan are required. Volunteers and donations are welcomed. For information, call Habitat at 636-3230 or stop by the office in the Carbon County Courthouse.
Cancer screening – Southeastern Utah Health District in Price offers checks twice a month for women up to and including age 64. Clinics include breast, pelvic and pap exams at low or no cost. Women 50 to 64 may qualify for free mammogram vouchers. Call the health department at 637-3671 to schedule appointments.
Infant immunization clinics – The health district in Price offers the clinics Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
ABC Learning Center – has books, computers and activities for adults and children. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For tutoring appointments, call the center at 888-2061.
Social Security – Located at the county courthouse in Price, the office is manned by representatives the second Wednesday of the month from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., excluding a half-hour lunch. For information, residents may call Social Security toll-free at 1-800-772-1213.
Single mothers – Bringing Hope Foundation meets are Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Price Community Center. Single mothers share experiences and learn about community resources. No fees required. Participants must enroll by contacting the foundation at 637-5542.
Caregivers support group – meets the fourth Wednesday of the month at 3:30 p.m. at in room 140 at 375 S. Carbon Avenue, Price. For information, contact Lisa Perla at 637-4950.

Schools
Castle Valley Center accepting wheelchairs, walkers – The center will write donation receipts for tax record for residents providing used wheelchairs, walkers, etc., to assist students in the Carbon and Emery area. Yearbook archives – College of Eastern Utah Library is looking for copies of CEU and Carbon High yearbooks its archives. The missing years include 1928, 1933, 1939, 1955, 1959, 1961 and 1966. The WWII years are also missing, but the library is not positive if any were produced during the war. Contact the CEU library at 613-5209. Events
Theatre production auditions – Coal Country Players and the college theatre department have scheduled open auditions June 4 and June 5 for “Love Rides the Rails” or “Will the Mail Train Run Tonight?” Auditions for seven male and five female roles will be conducted from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Geary Theatre on the CEU campus. Community members may also try out for Oleos and musical numbers. Directed by Todd Olsen, the Morland Cary melodrama will be presented Aug. 8-10, Aug. 12-13 and Aug. 27-28. Free American Cancer Society car wash – is slated June 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Taco Time parking lot. Donations will be accepted, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Relay for Life – Residents interested in assisting on a committee or forming a team to participate in the American Cancer Society’s 2002 event are encouraged to contact Becky Kloepfer at 472-8295 or Terri Lott at Carbon Credit Union. The fundraising activity is slated June 21 and June 22.

Inspired by the Ancients – Mark Vranesh’s mixed media works inspired by rock art sites and landscapes in the state will be displayed June 7 to Aug. 26 at CEU Prehistoric Museum. An artist reception is slated June 6 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the museum in Price.
Cancer patient fundraising dinner, auction – are planned June 8 for Rick Dotson at Cleveland Elementary. Dinner is at 5 p.m., with entertainment by the Val Jensen Band. The auction will follow at 6:30 p.m. The event also includes a prize drawing. Proceeds will benefit Dotson, who has been diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer. Sunnyside rodeo – The event is slated July 12 and July 13 at Sunnyside arena. The royalty contest will be conducted June 30 at 7 p.m. at the arena.
