After the drubbing that East Carbon administered their sister Tooele County high school, Wendover, earlier in the evening, it would seem the Lady Buffalos would have second thoughts about playing top five Carbon team.
They should have had third, fourth and fifth thoughts too, because the Lady Dinos turned the opportunity into a victory and rang everyone’s bell as they had five players in double figures on the way to 93-48 smearing of the team from Tooele.
And this time it wasn’t just a Chelsey and Cassie Warburton show either as almost everyone got into the act and 13 players scored in the game.
The game was close for about the first three minutes of the first quarter and then the Carbon racing team took off, stealing the ball and almost scoring at will. They took off on a 20 point run and never looked back, or sideways for that matter as they out ran the lady Buffalos off the court 26-7.
The second quarter was almost a repeat of the first as the Carbon girls put up 27 points while they held the Tooele kids to the same total they had in the first period. Consequently the half time score was 53-14.
Carbon fans were astounded by the score; they were almost in disbelief.
But the third quarter brought in a seemingly different Tooele team. Maybe the coach quickly flew in some more players or the team passed through some type of scientific transformation machine, but one thing was clear. The Tooele team was now ready to play.
And play they did. With little hope of overcoming the big lead they just didn’t give up, but came on the court shooting reasonably well and playing some good defense on Carbon’s key players. They were able to hold the Lady Dinos to just 16 points, while they themselves scored 16 too. It was at least a moral victory for them.
But in the fourth quarter, they and Carbon returned to the old ways. Coach Bruce Bean sent in a lot of reserves, but how does a coach slow hungry players who want to play down; he doesn’t.
Carbon’s team on the floor took it to the Lady Buffalos and ended up out scoring them 24-16 in the quarter. This quarter was not played without some controversy however, as the Tooele coach got one technical and was warned a couple of more times.
The leading scorer in the game was Cassie Warburton with 14 points, but sister Chelsey got 12 points and a Stocktonesque total of 13 steals. Stephanie Cox recorded 13, Danielle Julian had 11 and the youngest of the Warburton sisters, 14 year old Morgan had 12.
Sometimes a blowout is a good thing for the winning team, sometimes it is not. When the Lady Dinos travel to Cedar City on Thursday to play Cedar High and to St. George on Friday to play Pine View, the story will definitely be different; these are much better teams playing on their home court.
Based on past performance, however, Carbon will easily be up to the task and will come back for Christmas with two more victories under their belt.
Then on Dec. 28 the team travels to it’s biggest test of the year so far. They will go to Heber to play the number one ranked Wasatch Wasps.
A win there could mean a number one ranking for the Lady Dinos.
