The newly-elected Mayor of East Carbon City shocked the community by resigning immediately after being sworn into office Tuesday.
Harry C. Goslin, Jr. out-polled incumbent Mayor Doug Parsons by a wide margin in the November General Election. Goslin took the oath of office and promptly announced that, due to personal reasons, he won’t be able to fulfill his obligations as mayor. He said he may have to move from the area because of his wife’s medical issues.
East Carbon City Recorder Liz Holt, who administered the oath of office, said it was a first for the city and officials were unsure how to proceed. She said City Attorney Jeremy Humes advised that the procedure as outlined by state code requires the city to advertise the vacancy and take applications to fill the position.
Humes said the process would be the same whether or not the newly-elected official resigned before or after taking the oath of office. The applicants will be interviewed and a successor will be appointed by a vote of the city council during the next regularly scheduled council meeting on January 16. The deadline to apply is January 15.
Newly-elected council members Donald L. McCarty II and Larry Wood also took the oath of office Tuesday and were formally seated on the East Carbon City Council.
