Funds awarded by National Resource and Conservation Service
Carbon County recently received a $700,000 grant for three flood control projects, two of which are within Price City jurisdiction.
The money will come from the National Resource and Conservation Service.
At last week’s Price City Council meeting the Council agreed to pay $135,000 to Jones & DeMille Engineering.
City Engineer Russell Seeley explained the council unanimously approved a contract to the engineering firm for design and construction management services. That will be Price City’s commitment to the projects. The remainder will come from the grant. The locations Price City will be responsible for include one just outside the city limits near the Carbon School District offices, and one near Piccolo Auto Plaza. The Carbon County location is near the landfill.
Seeley said the flood gates will be completely rebuilt and automated. The exciting part, said Seeley, is the automation. The gates will open when the water is high and close when the water recedes.
What many residents don’t know, said Council Member Leif Nelson, is that not only are the canals used for irrigation purposes, but also for flood control. Lots of employees work behind the scenes to protect the community. Seeley said the contract with the county was previously signed, then the grant came “out of the blue.”
Work on the canals will begin as soon as the irrigation season is over. All, Seeley said, will be completed this autumn.
