The Carbon boy’s soccer team opened their 2018 season with a 0-0 tie against Union on Wednesday.
In the first half the Dinos had a couple opportunities to take the lead but couldn’t convert and get the ball in the net.
Both team struggled throughout the game to score a goal and the game went to overtime with a 0-0 score.
Carbon had several shots on goal in the first overtime but Union’s keeper made a couple amazing saves to keep the Dinos away from getting the win.
The game would move to the second overtime period but both teams continued to struggle to get the ball in the net.
Despite these struggles, Dinos’ head coach Chad Cowdell said that he liked what he saw in the game for being the first one of the season
“We controlled the match for the most part, we broke down in the midfield in the second half. We had lots of scoring opportunities but could not put the ball in the back of the net,” said Cowdell.
Wednesday’s game was the first time the team played on a full-size field. The Dinos also did not have any preseason games.
Defensively, the Dinos were led by the performance of goalkeeper Jack Jeppson.
“Today he made some great saves, he’s very smart and very disciplined. He is a great goalkeeper for us and I don’t need to worry about him during the game because usually he is there where he needs to be,” said Cowdell.
The Dinos will now turn their attention to Waterford who comes to Price on Friday for a game that will begin at 3:30 p.m.
Waterford was a state champion at the 2A level a few years ago and Coach Cowdell said it will be not a small task to take on.
The Dinos will have a day in between the games to get ready and fine tune their offense.
“We can do well against them but we got to find a way to score,” said Cowdell.
Friday’s game against Waterford is a non-region match. One of only two on their 12-game schedule.
Last season the Dinos finished 2-6-1 in non-region games and 5-10-1 overall.
