PRICE- Paulmina Virginia Nick Seely New, the youngest child of John and Maria Teresa Cortese Nick’s 10 children rejoined her parents and siblings
when she passed away in her home surrounded by her children on Wednesday, June 13, 2018. Born April 3, 1925 in Price, Utah,
Paulmina married Jacobsen “Jake” Seely on July 28, 1945. They had three daughters. Jake died in an automobile accident on February 14, 1954. She subsequently married James “Jim” New on June 4, 1956 and they had one son before Jim passed away on January 8, 1959.
A courageous and strong woman, Paulmina raised her family working as a waitress in establishments like the Grille Café, later joining her sister Josephine to work for their nephew Frank Juliano in steakhouses that became Carbon County institutions: the El Rancho, Bel Air, and the
Matador. A lifelong member of Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Paulmina was blessed with a beautiful voice. She shared her gift by
joining the church choir in elementary school and continued for more than seven decades. Along with her sisters Kerry and Josephine, her talent and compassion led to a lifetime of service to her community, singing at festivals, celebrations, and thousands of funerals. Joined by their niece, Sr. Jean Juliano, the sisters performed frequently on the radio as the Singing Cowgirls. In 1994, the singing Nick Sisters were honored with the Utah Governor’s Award in the Arts for their years of service and contribution to Utah’s culture. A fantastic cook, Paulmina prepared dishes for multiple church fundraising events such as Octoberfest, the DDD drive, and the Spaghetti Dinner for many years. After decades of service to her church, she was honored as a Utah Catholic Woman of the Year in 2016.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Symbii Home Health and Hospice, especially Rick Stockburger and Melissa Nelson, as well as Dr’s. Larsen and Williams, the Castleview Hospital staff, and all the caregivers for their loving and tender attention.
