The Carbon girls’ basketball team defeated the American Leadership Academy Eagles 72-19 Tuesday night at home.
Tuesday’s win gives them a perfect 4-0 record at home and a 4-2 Region 14 record. In the four games at home this season for Carbon, they have outscored their opponents a combined 252 to 105.
“I think it is important to get back on a winning track and to reestablish how you play defense and what you do offensively,” said Carbon Head Coach Ted Bianco.
Carbon started the game off hot on defense forcing several turnovers including three steals by senior forward Kelsey Sorenson.
Those takeaways led to a 19-2 start in the first five minutes of the game.
Freshman Makenna Blanc scored six of her team’s first eight points in the period.
According to sophomore guard Abby Saccomanno, Blanc is a key part of the defensive success and creating points off turnovers.
“She runs the court really when we get steals, she is first when we get down the court and when we find her and she makes the layup almost every time,” said Saccomanno.
Another part of the big start by the Lady Dinos was the three-point shooting of sophomore point guard Jordan Bianco.
Bianco made four three pointers in the first quarter and one in the second quarter to help her team keep the game completely out of reach of the Eagles.
“She needed to come out and shoot the ball well tonight. She has had some games where she hasn’t shot the ball very well, tonight was a night that she needed to get her confidence back and hopefully that happened,” said Coach Bianco.
The Lady Dinos would finish the quarter with a 32-5 lead heading into the second quarter.
All five starters for Carbon contributed to outscore the Eagles 19-4 in the second quarter, including threes by Sorenson and Saccomanno.
Sorenson opened the second half with the same play she exhibited in the first quarter, defense and easy shots. She scored nine points in the beginning of the third quarter before sitting the bench for most of the second half.
The Carbon defense would still control the second half despite most of the starters being on the bench.
Multiple Lady Dinos finished in double-figures against ALA including Sorenson with a team-high 17 points. Bianco had 15 points and Blanc had 12 points.
The Lady Dinos will hit the road this week to take on Delta on Thursday night. Carbon will look to pick up their second win on the road this season, something that Coach Bianco said they to improve on.
“We have to learn how to play on the road a little bit better. We got to be able to walk into somebody else’s gym and play full game,” said Coach Bianco.
The Dinos will return home next week for two games against Juab on Tuesday night and Providence Hall on Thursday night.
Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Carbon High School Gymnasium.
