Carbon baseball won two games last week against the Union Cougars to remain undefeated in Region 14 play.
Union entered last week as the number one team in the 3A classification and atop the Region 14 standings.
On Wednesday, Carbon defeated Union 14-10 in Roosevelt to give the Cougars their first loss of their conference schedule.
With the game tied 10-10 in the top of the seventh and with two men on, Carbon’s Ty Anderson scored on an error at third base.
Carbon’s Zac Bradley would hit an RBI double after that to give Carbon a two-run lead.
The Dinos would add two more runs in the inning and senior pitcher Triton Abeyta would shut down the Cougars in the bottom of the seventh to get the win.
Carbon Head Coach Jeff Cisneros said that playing close games like they did on Wednesday will benefit his team in the future.
“There are good teams out there that we are going to have to beat and playing in some of these close games will help us in the future,” said Cisneros.
Anderson and Anthony Jones each had a team-high three RBIs in Wednesday’s win.
At home on Friday the Dinos used a big fifth inning to put the Cougars away and win 9-2.
In the bottom of the fifth the Dinos added six runs to their 3-1 lead to pull ahead of the Cougars 9-1.
Errors and walks given up by Union loaded the bases and the Dinos took advantage and scored on a sac fly by Bradley and two passed balls with an RBI single and double from Jadon Robertson and Anderson respectively.
Anderson had a big week for Carbon at the plate with four hits, five RBIs, two doubles and a triple.
“Ty has been playing well and had some huge hits for us this past week. He is playing well and we are going to need his defense and offense to be successful,” said Cisneros.
Cody Lowe had an impressive down on the mound for Carbon in 5.1 innings of work. Lowe threw six strikeouts and gave up only one run with four hits.
Not only did Anderson and Lowe play a big part of the Dinos’ two big wins this week, Cisneros believes it took his whole lineup to get the job done.
“I could really mention everyone one of our starters. You don’t beat the number one team in your classification without everyone playing a big part,” said Cisneros.
The Dinos now have a 6-0 record in Region 14 and a 13-6 overall record heading into this week.
Carbon will hit the road on Tuesday to take on American Leadership Academy and then turnaround on Friday and host ALA at home in Helper.
The two games this week will be the first ever meetings between the teams as region opponents. Carbon will look to get their eighth and ninth straight wins while ALA is still looking for their first Region 14 win of the season.
