Carbon baseball defeated the Richfield Wildcats 18-4 in an elimination game at the 3A State Playoffs in Kearns Friday night.
The Dinos bats came alive from the get go scoring eight runs in the first two innings.
“When you get to this point you see some lesser pitching obviously but sometimes you don’t always lesser pitching. I thought our guys did a good job coming out and hitting everybody they threw at us,” said Carbon Head Coach Jeff Cisneros.
Cody Lowe hit a three-run home run over left field with no outs to put the Dinos up double-digits in the top of the third inning.
The Wildcats would end up having to use three different pitchers in the first three innings.
With the bats on fire for Carbon, the defense was just as a good for the Dinos with Adrian Sanchez on the mound the first couple innings. Sanchez didn’t allow a hit or a walk the first 2 1/3 innings.
“Adrian has kind of struggled a little bit this year but we wanted to get him out there and I thought he threw a lot of strikes for us. I thought our defense came out and played well and got a lot of ground balls,” said Cisneros.
Richfield would score a run off a sac fly in the bottom of the third off of pitcher Jaxon Leonard.
Carbon would add four more runs in the top of the fourth including a triple by Nate Olson that brought two runners home.
Leonard would be replaced by sophomore Kaleb Nelson who would allow two runs to score on walks with bases loaded.
Nelson would bounce back in the fifth inning with a lead-off double which would spark another three-run inning for the Dinos at the plate.
Carbon would close out the Wildcats in the fifth inning and win in five innings by virtue of the 10-run rule.
The Dinos will now move on to the next round against Manti at 10 a.m. at Gates Field.
The winner of that game will move on to the 3A State Championship game against Grantsville.
