On February 22, 2018, Maria Elisabeth left her earthly body behind and went to join those who have gone before her. She was born on December 27, 1934 in Den Hague, Netherlands to Albert Wiersma and Catherina Van Der Wal. She was the oldest of 8; Adrian (deceased), Hess, Helen, Rudy, Albert, Paul and Pieter.
Her family joined the LDS Church and immigrated to the US in 1955. They settled in the Salt Lake Valley where she was employed tailoring suits. She enjoyed singing in the Dutch Choir and going for root beer floats with her friends. She and her brother, Adrian also competed in many Ballroom Dance competitions for which she made her own gowns.
She met Dean Mitchell and they were married on June 14, 1957. Together they had four children, Sherill (Richard) Shaw, Eldon (Diane) Mitchell, Judy Mitchell, and Deanna (Wayne) Maxfield. Dean passed away in 1991. She married Jack Lacy, he later died. Maria continued to sew, providing for her family by making custom wedding dresses and tailoring clothes. She owned her own upholstery shop for many years. She enjoyed making handmade gifts for family and friends until just a few weeks ago; you could not leave her home without something she had made. She had many fond memories of being a “Snowbird” and wandering the deserts of California and Arizona. After Jack died she lived for several years in LaVerkin, Utah until Deanna and Wayne opened their home to her. The past 16 months were spent happily living at Beehive Home in Price, Utah where she had many dear friends. The family would like to extend a grateful Thank You to Deanna and Wayne for their tender and loving care of our mom.
Preceded in death by her husbands, parents, brother and great-grandson, Richard Jay Valenzuela. She is survived by her siblings, four children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
