A band, including Sun Advocate alumni John Serfustini, second from left, entertained guests who wondered into amjworks studio in Helper for February’s First Friday celebration. The theme this month was Chinese New Year, though most costumes looked strangely Japanese.

The resident artists and their adoring fans took to the streets of Helper last Friday to celebrate the first Friday in February.
Since July, the little town has come alive for the first Friday of each month, celebrating the eclectic vibe and artistry enshrined within the tiny town’s multiple art galleries.
The First Friday of February featured a Chinese New Year theme, complete with parade down the town’s central thoroughfare, kitschy costumes and a fireworks display.
The town’s elegant art galleries—amjworks studio, The Boxcar Gallery, K2 Gallery, Canvas Alchemy, Three Little Llamas, Ben Steele’s art studio and the Balance Rock restaurant among others—all featured some form of entertainment, a band, music, food or drink or simply a festive atmosphere, keeping visitors and residents alike enthused to be starting their weekend in New Old West fashion.
