Carbon High School’s golfer Ryan Gagon tied for second place at the 3A state golf tournament last week. The team ranked third in the state- finishing with their highest performance in Dino golf history. Over the past two years, the team has finished fifth.
Senior, Ryker Smith finished fourth overall continuing his high school tradition of finishing in the top 10 at state.
The tournament is a grueling two day event- where golfer’s scores are averaged over 36 holes. Gagon finished the first day in third shooting a 77, and came on strong the second day. “Ryan made a big difference in the last 6 holes. He shot 4 birdies (one swing under par),” explained Coach Tom King.
Smith was low for the tournament on the first day with a 74 and came back day 2 to shoot a 78 placing him in fourth overall.
The first day’s conditions were really difficult. It was windy and miserable on the Cove View course in Richfield. Carbon finished at a 326 as a team. They were within close distance behind Grand by only 5 swings and 2 behind Morgan.
On day two, the team’s play improved, finishing out the tournament with a 308.
Other varsity golfers who helped earn the teams ranking included Carson Martines, Zade Carrillo and Brady Gagon. Martines and Brady Gagon finished in the top 20 with two-day scores of 165 and 166 respectively.
Grand took first place with a final team score of 620. Morgan follewed just 4 swings behind to claim the silver. Carbon Dinos earned third with a 634. North Sanpete trailed in 4th with a 651.
“It was a great season and I am very proud of the Carbon golfers. They played well this year,” commented coach Tom King.
