The MECCA bike club hosted their fall bike festival on Sept. 22-24. The group staged rides from the Wedge. Club member LaMar Guymon said, “There were more than 80 riders, plus their families. There were a lot of kids out riding. We rode the Good Water Rim Trail, Antelope Run toward the Red Ledges as well as the Buckhorn Draw ride.
“It was a little windy and chilly, but it was beautiful out there. We had a lot of new riders who hadn’t been to our area before. We had a lady from Texas and some came from Idaho, Colorado and all over. The Wedge is one of the most beautiful places on earth. We had rides going out along the Spirit railroad grade as well as an OHV trail that leads to Angels Landing. Most of the rides were centered around the Wedge.
We gave away two bikes. Leo Wright from Orangeville won one. Bikers entered into the drawing when they registered for the festival. BKs catered one of the dinners, and they brought steak and dutch oven potatoes, shrimp and garden burgers.
Fattys catered the Saturday morning breakfast. Dollie Wilberg, Eldith Wakefield and Valynn Gordon put on the Sunday breakfast. Eldith is the oldest member of the bike club. She is 84 and she rode eight miles.
The club is planning ahead for their Spring Festival which is the third weekend in May. The location hasn’t been determined yet. They have staged out of Green River for a number of years, but this past spring they staged from Huntington and added a couple of rides. They had a positive response.
Tourism adds a half a million annually to the economy of Emery County. The Good Water Rim Trail is one of five premier rides in the state of Utah according to the Utah Mountain Biking.
“The development of trails will continue to draw people to our area. We have slick rock in Saucer Basin that rivals anything they have in Moab. We need to continue to develop these areas,” said Guymon.
