Carbon Dino Jewelianna Nielsen was victorious at the region tennis tournament held at the University of Utah Eccles Tennis Center this week. She ended the tournament with a 2-1 record.
Her first match was against Wasatch Academy, and she lost in a lose third tie breaker set. “It was a very competitive match- it was more like a semi-final round than a first round,” said CHS coach Crystal Bettis. In the first set, Nielsen was down 3-0 and then rallied, losing 5-7.
In her following matches, Nielsen was able to come back and beat her opponents by large stretches to tally an overall winning record. In the second match, Nielsen faced Gunnison and was victorious 6-0 and 6-1. In the third match, she battled Providence Hall winning 6-2, 6-2. She qualified to compete in the state tourney on September 28 at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
To prepare Nielsen for state she and Bettis are working on fine tuning some of her shots and keeping consistent by hitting several buckets of balls every day.
An advantage Nielsen has over many competitors is her grit. “A big part of winning is the mental game. Jewelianna has mental stamina to hang in there and win tough matches by keeping her head in the game,” added Bettis.
Several other members of the team were very close to qualifying for state. “All of the girls on the team improved a ton throughout the season,” explained Bettis.
Last week the lady Dinos competed against Juab, on their courts. The junior varsity team, Cami Taylor and Sara Haycock, beat the Wasps 8-4.
Jewelianna Nielsen wins region tournament
Jewelianna Nielsen, a junior at Carbon High, won the majority of her matches at the region tournament. She will be swinging at state on September 28.
