The Carbon High School girls’ volleyball team won its match against Juab High School on Tuesday three sets to one. The Dinos now have an 11-game winning streak dating back to Aug. 29.
The Lady Dinos dominated the first two sets of the night, defeating the Wasps 25-17 and 25-14 respectively. In the third set, however, Carbon made some unforced errors that allowed Juab to take a consistent two-point lead. While the Dinos were able to come back from a 24-20 deficit to trail by one point, the Wasps were able to secure the win in the third match 25-23.
“I just told them they can go one of two ways,” said head coach Cristen Johnson of her talk with the team before beginning the fourth set. “They could pout and fight and worry about that last game, or they could forget about that last game and come out and play like they knew they could and play hard and that we would be fine, and that’s what they did.”
In the fourth set, the Dinos got back to their winning ways and defeated the Wasps 24-17 to take the match win.
“I want them to have that killer instinct mentality of when you’re up two games to zero, you’ve played well, you’ve beat them easily two games in a row, to not have that let down in that decisive game, so hopefully we’re going to fix that, get that taken care of,” said Johnson. “For the most part, I thought we played well, other than game three.”
For the Dinos, senior Sara Morley had 27 kills and 22 digs, senior Jordan Scoggins had 12 kills and 16 digs, junior Brecklyn Frame had 31 digs, senior Mallorie Bradley had 46 assists and five service aces, junior Giulia Malvicini had seven kills and five service aces, senior Abby Robinson had 12 digs and senior Alex Thayne had three blocks. As a team, the Dinos had 53 kills, 104 digs and 13 aces.
Carbon is now 13-5 overall and 3-0 in Region play, and having a season that is turning out to be quite successful. The Dinos will have a tough match on Thursday as they travel to North Sanpete High School, who is also 3-0 in Region.
“That’s going to be a big game for us,” said Johnson. “North Sanpete has a really good volleyball atmosphere. They bring a lot of fans out, it’s loud, it’s crazy in there, it’s really intense so I’m interested to see how my girls respond to that. I hope they respond well to that and that we can come out with the win on Thursday.”
