Slowly but surely, the Carbon High Track and Field team have improved over the last few years. And a big sign of the improvement was on display at the State Meet at BYU on Saturday.
Carbon’s talents were on display as a mixture of talent, from freshmen to seniors, competed on the biggest stage of the year against the best athletes in 3A.
CHS Head Coach Jimmy Jewkes said he was very pleased with how the Dinos did at State. He noted senior Garrett Marsing’s performance with two individual state championships as well as personal bests for many of the other athletes on the team.
“I thought our team did really well, especially Garrett,” said Jewkes. “We really got some good performances from the rest of the team.”
Marsing finished with championships in the 1600 and 3200 meter races. He nearly captured a third championship but finished second in the 800 meter race.
“It’s the best performance at a State Meet that I’ve seen,” said Jewkes.
Jewkes also noted the performance of girl’s shot put thrower Morgan Hillam. Jewkes said Hillam improved her throw about feet in between the time of the Region 12 Meet to the State Meet.
“It’s kind of exciting to see what she and other athletes on the team can do next year,” he said.
Sarah Ohlwiler, a freshman, ran the 100 meter hurdles and the 100 meter races while also competing in the girl’s long jump where she finished in ninth place with a jump of 16-01.75 feet.
In the boy’s 4X400 relay, two sets of brothers, the Quintons (Dallin and Kyle) and the Barretts (Kyle and Cache) teamed to finish in 13th place with a time of 3:36.55.
The boy’s Medley Relay team finished in third place with a time of 3:33.69. Jewkes said that was the best finish for the Medley Relay team ever at a State Meet.
In the girl’s high jump, the Dinos had three girls place. Abbi Powell finished in fifth place with a jump of 4-11. Jayde Moynier and Lexi Monson also placed for Carbon, finishing in 8th and 12th place respectively.
The Dinos as a team combined to finish in 13th place overall with 39 points. The boy’s team, led by Garrett Marsing’s performance, finished in sixth place with 34 points.
Jewkes said the team exceeded expectations this season.
“There were a lot of good times out there at the State Meet by our team,” he said.
That sense of accomplishment is already starting to carry over despite the season just having been completed. Jewkes said he is excited to see what will come from all of the experience that the team gained this season.
“On the way home I just started thinking of how we can beat Richfield and how we can build and take the program to the next level,” Jewkes said with a laugh. “The program took a big step forward this season and we’re excited about where things are headed for next year.”
