Many teams have been crushed by the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle football squad this season. Carbon was their latest victim in a 58-6 loss. The good news is that Carbon did not join the fate of three other teams as they avoided a shutout with a fourth quarter score.
The Dinos held the Soaring Eagle offense to seven points for most of the first quarter. Then with just two minutes remaining things got crazy. Suddenly the Dinos were down by 29.
Carbon held Juan Diego to nine points the rest of the half. In the second half of play the Soaring Eagle kept the pressure on, but only put up 13 in the third. In the fourth it was another long pass from Blake Najera to Tysen Stevens that put the Dinos on the board to avoid the goose egg.
“Wish we could have had that early in the game.” said Coach Leo Paur. “Lance Deeter had another great game as did Tysen Stevens. And Blake Najera, bless his heart, in his first year as quarterback he has really stepped it up. The team is just so young, I have hope for the future.”
He is looking ahead to the last game Friday with North Sanpete. “They have two wins, but we can still beat them. Our team has not given up. If I knew at the beginning of the season what I know now, I would have done things differently. We are back down and many of the kids who joined mid season quit already. I think I should have stayed with a small squad.”
Friday night’s game will kick off at 7 p.m. at the Carbon High field.
