The Carbon High Dino football team ended their season last Friday night at home for a sparse crowd. It was too bad because it ended up being the most entertaining game of the season. While the Dinos lost 28-14 to the North Sanpete Hawks, it was a game worth watching.
North Sanpete scored in the first quarter of play after it looked like the Dinos would hold them. Carbon’s offense stuggled again, but by the end of the first quarter had put together a couple of short drives. In the second quarter, the drives got better and it looked a couple of times like they might punch it in.
But the Hawk defense held. With the clock ticking away, it seemed like the score at the break might end up being only 7-0 when the Hawks broke a big run to score with less than a minute and a half to play. In the final seconds Carbon drove back down the field, but turned it over deep in the Hawks territory to end the half.
North Sanpete came out and doubled up their points in the second half of play. Carbon was able to match points in the half with two TD’s of their own. Tysen Stevens broke a 65 yard run to score and later Jake Knighton took it in on a 25 yard pass from Blake Najera. Damian Olson kicked both the extra points.
For Carbon the return of JD Grasso and Max Misner to the line-up after missing most of the season helped. But the focus now turns to next season.
“It all boiled down to us not having a line this season. Next year those kids will be bigger, faster and stronger and we will have a really good line,” commented Coach Leo Paur. “I am encouraging the kids to participate in at least one other sport to make them well rounded athletes. I will be working with the kids in the weight room all winter and I hope we will be at this level already by the time we start next season. We will be missing some of our most experienced players like Tysen Stevens and Lance Deeter and need to fill in those gaps. Deeter has been one of the smartest players I have ever coached.”
Paur is looking forward to next season and hopes to see his undergrads back for another season of play.
It was a disappointing year for the squad, but for Paur the building of a contending team has just begun.
