Young Carbon team competes well
The Carbon High School wrestling team competed in the state meet in Ogden late last month, and their showing demonstrated it was a rebuilding season, but a good one.
A sixth place showing by Tanner Herrick, in the 119 lb. class, was the highest a Carbon wrestler was able to place during the meet.
The team also had several other grapplers who had a good showing as well.
Jay Workman was one of the up and coming underclassmen who didn’t place, but had a strong showing.
As the only senior on the team this year Nick Deeter garnered some awards of his own. Carrying a 4.0 grade point average since his freshman year, he was presented Academic All-State. He was one of only 10 wrestlers at 3A schools to earn that honor. Deeter placed fourth at the region meet in Delta at the 215 lb. weight class.
With the team only losing one senior this year to graduation and with two juniors and 10 sophomores moving up, next year’s team looks to be much stronger.
There are also some strong contenders in the junior high ranks. The junior high wrestlers, composed of kids from Mont Harmon and Helper Jr. High, placed fourth at the 3A State junior high meet in Richfield recently.
The following students placed at the state event: Lance Deeter, first place; Bryce Jackman, first place; W. Martinez, first place; Kenny Wood, second place; Kahill Hunt, fourth place; N. Velasquez, fourth place; Cody Hunt, fifth place; and Kelsey Vasten, sixth place
Lance Deeter is following in his older brother’s footsteps to become an Academic All-Star as he currently holds a 4.0 GPA at Helper Junior High. He had an impressive record of 31-1 as a wrestler this year.
