Looking toward defending the state diving championship they won in 2005, the boys from Carbon traveled to South Summit High School for the Region Diving Championships on Jan. 28
Michael Glasson led the boys team to a first place finish by also placing first as an individual.
Glasson added a lot of degree of difficulty to his diving, by putting in an inward double somersault to his one and a half inward somersault. He also threw in a back double somersault and a front double somersault. He also scored high in his front two and one-half somersault dive. These dives gave Michael a personal and meet best score of 362.85 points.
Travis Hobbs placed third over all in the boys competition. He also increased his degree of difficulty and improved his personal best score at this meet.
Christian Axelgard placed fifth with Kent Olsen in seventh and Jacob Perez in ninth. Olsen and Perez did not get their best score at this meet, but showed some good improvement in at least half of their dives.
Jordan Burrows was the only boy in the six dive category. He had a personal best score and placed second in this competition.
In the girls division the two girls from CHS placed third as a team. Chelsey Cloward placed sixth over all and looked good on most of her dives.
“We felt she could have moved up to 4th or 5th place if she had hit all of her dives,” said diving coach Stewart Foster.
Katie Hobbs placed 13th over all. She had out scored a couple of the girls ahead of her, but was not on her dives at this meet.
The team will now go to the state diving championships at BYU in Provo on Feb. 9.
The girls will dive at 9 a.m. and the boys at 12 p.m.
