While it’s early in the basketball season for the College of Eastern Utah Lady Eagles, in some ways it feels too late in the season for Coach Dave Paur.
“We could easily be 6-2 but instead we are now 2-6 after this past weekend,” he wrote in a facsimile Monday morning.
The womens team had just returned from a disastrous road tournament at the College of Southern Idaho where they lost games to Yakima Valley Community College 94-65 and then lost a close one to South Mountain Community College 54-53.
“Poor shooting, some injuries and some suspensions on our team have taken their toll on us this year,” stated Paur. “We just have to do a better job of executing our offensive and defensive sets.”
In the game Friday against the Lady Yaks the team fared poorly right from the beginning. They got behind and ended up the first half with a 20 point deficit, 49-29.
They improved their shooting a bit in the second half but still failed to do any catch up, although they did hold the Yakima women to four less points than the team from Washington had scored in the first half.
Top scorers in the game for CEU was Jana Glover with 20 points and Whitney Fardig with 13. Fardig was also the top rebounder with 8 boards.
Molly Clark led the Lady Yaks with 25 points.
The Lady Eagles only went 23 for 68 from the field for 38 percent shooting.
With that loss the team went to work on Saturday night, despite being short handed. They stayed neck and neck with the Lady Cougars from Arizona through the first half only trailing by one at the half 31-30. In the second the lead switched back and forth but the Arizona women came out on top.
The team will now be home for a game for the first time this season as they face Dixie on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. in the BDAC.
