After a rousing victory against Uintah in Vernal last week, it seemed the Carbon boys had momentum to go into the Ben Lomand Tournament in Ogden with a winning attitude.
But while the attitude was there, the opponents would have none of it as the Dinos went down in two games, first to the home team Scotties 63-50 and then in a squeaker against Park City where they suffered a 84-82 loss.
In the first game on Friday night a weak first quarter put the team behind the proverbial eight ball right away. The Scotties outscored the Dino team 14-5.
But Carbon came back in the second quarter outscoring the home boys 16-15.
After the half Carbon then settled for losing both quarters by small margins, 19-16 in the third and finally 15-13 in the fourth.
Skyler Namanny led the team with 15 points, nine of which came from three point goals. Tyler Nelson added 10 points.
On Saturday Ben Lomand went on to play Canyon View, which had defeated Park City on Friday and consequently the Dinos drew the Miners for the earlier consolation game.
This game was nothing like the one before for the Dinos. It went into double overtime before the Park City kids were able to win it. For most Dino fans it has been a long time since they can remember a double overtime game the boys participated in.
All the quarters were close with the first being no exception. Both teams shot well and at the end of the period the score read Carbon 14, Park City 13.
The next quarter was nip and tuck but Carbon came out feeling good about what they had done in the first half, but the Park City kids were determined to win.
The rest of regulation went back and forth with the teams tied at the end of the game.
In the first overtime both teams were hot, each scoring 15 points apiece.
Then with the second overtime the wear and tear of two games in two nights and a double overtime began to show. Park City only managed 10 points, but Carbon even scored less only putting up eight points.
Carbon was led in scoring by Chase Julian with 17 points while Miles Hunsaker had 17 and Namanny contributed 16. Cameron Oliver scored 10.
The defeat must have been bitter considering how hard the Dinos had to play to reach a double overtime, and they still have one more game to play before they can return to the friendly confines of the Dinogym. The team faces Grantsville in Tooele County on Wednesday night.
Then it’s back home to play a Canyon View on Friday night, the team that beat Park City but lost to Ben Lomand in the championship of the recently completed tournament.
The weekend losses places Carbon with a 1-3 record while their upcoming preseason opponents have 0-2 and 2-1 records respectively.
