3A Coach of the Year
In recognition of his committment to high school athletics, Carbon volleyball coach Bruce Bean was named the 3A coach of the year by the Utah High School Activities Association.
Bean began his coaching career at Sugar City, a small high school in southeastern Idaho, with football. He has coached nearly every sport offered to male and female athletes, including baseball, softball, track, volleyball, basketball and wrestling.
Midway through his coaching career, Bean fought his own battle with cancer. He said the experience affected his approach to athletics in that he gained more patience and an even better coaching temperament.
Bean has been the head coach of the ladies volleyball team for seven years and the head coach of the ladies basketball team for six.
According to Bean, working in ladies sports requires a different approach than mens. But, he said he enjoys working with female competitors.
“I like their work ethic,” he stated. “They are an honest athlete.”
Bean is now preparing for the 2003-2004 basketball season after only a week off from volleyball.
But, he said he doesn’t mind.
“A bad day coaching is better than a good day doing a lot of other things,” he commented.
