Letter to the Editor: Don’t go to war

By Sun Advocate

I am a Republican, and have been a Republican since I was first able to vote. I supported President Bush in his presidential election, just as I supported his father in his. I am a wife and the mother of a 4 1/2 year old daughter.
I, however, have informed him in a letter similar to this one that I am very much opposed to the direction the United States is heading in the possible war with Iraq. While I am not a fan or supporter in any way of Saddam Hussein, I do not want to see the U.S. push ahead of the United Nations in this matter.
My husband was in the army as an army ranger, and served in several conflicts, including Panama, Granada, and in Desert Storm, where he was wounded and where he lost several of his men in the Ruqi Pocket. He is permanently disabled partly due to the injuries he sustained in this war.
While I do agree that Saddam needs to be stopped, I do not think that we, the United State of America, should push forward in this unilateral decision to stop him until it is completely and totally clear that Mr. Hussein is indeed breaking the agreement with the United Nations and the world in the matter of his weapons program. I am aware that he indeed is likely doing so, but again, until the U.N. inspectors finish their job and are able to report with no doubts that the Iraqi government is indeed violating their agreement I would be very much against any actions by our government that will put our men and women of the armed forces in jeopardy.
Just a few days ago, in our small town, we sent about 30 of our own reservists off to prepare for their possible deployment.
I am sure I am not alone in this great country of ours when I say that I am completely against the move toward war that Mr. Bush seems to be intent on making.
In my letter I have asked him to please reconsider sending our soldiers off to what is surely going to be a long and perhaps futile battle. Let the U.N. do their job, and when they have completed it, we can see where we should be heading in this matter.
God Bless America.
