Is it patty cake, patty cake or a congratulatory high five? Actually neither as East Carbon’s Joyce Clark battles with an opposing player for a rebound at a recent game in the Viking gymnasium.

In the world of high school girls basketball it is hard to get time to savor the victories. Often games go almost back to back or with only one night separating them. That was the case with the East Carbon Lady Vikings games last week: they experienced the thrill of a big road victory on Tuesday evening, but less than 48 hours later they were suffering in the “should have beens” of an overtime loss to Dugway on the road.
Simply put, they smashed the girls team of Wasatch Academy 37-13 and then two nights later lost to the Lady Mustangs 52-50.
The win on Tuesday brought them to a .500 mark in league play and they looked good in doing it.
In the first quarter they took the big lead 15-3 and then dominated the kids from Mount Pleasant 7-0 in the second quarter.
The third period was closer as the scoring dropped with East Carbon taking a 10-8 quarter. In the final quarter neither team could really muster offense as East Carbon only scored five points. The Lady Tigers, however, even did less as they managed only a single bucket during the period.
The high scorer for the team was again Chelsey Timothy with 14 points. Misty Valdez put in 8 and Joyce Clark scored 6.
In Thursday nights game, Timothy again lit up the board with 19 points, but Dugway triumphed just the same.
The game began with East Carbon outscoring the Lady Mustangs 12-8, a good and positive start for the ECH kids. But Dugway came roaring back in the second quarter putting 19 points on the board while holding the Lady Vikings to only seven. The half time score was 27-19 lead for the western desert school.
In the third period the teams reversed roles as East Carbon came out hot and scored 20 points while keeping the Dugway team at bay with only eight. That put East Carbon ahead 39-35 and things looked very good.
However, the Dugway contingent became stingy in the fourth period allowing the Carbon County kids only seven points while struggling to 11 themselves. It was however enough to tie it up at the end of regulation.
In overtime it was back and forth, but it finally ended up time running out and Dugway scoring the final basket, giving them the two point victory.
While Timothy was putting up her big numbers, other team members were also contributing. Samantha Madrid put in 12 for the night, Clark added eight and Brittnie Leonard scored seven.
With that behind them they can now only look forward to playing two games this week, but the difference will be that they are both on the Lady Vikes home court.
Tuesday night (tonight) they play Wendover and then on Thursday they play Tintic. Both games are at 6 p.m.
Maybe they’ll get two victories this week that they can savor for a few days.
