With all the activities happening this summer in Carbon and Emery counties, and particularly this past weekend it reminds me of the importance of scheduling events.
Often communities over book one specific weekend with several popular activities and celebrations and then leave the next couple free without a thing to do. I have seen this time and time again in communities throughout Oregon, Arizona and Montana. Often the people who plan and organize these events fail to ask or inquire about what else is already booked the weekend they are looking at.
This past Friday and Saturday included the Sunnyside Days and the East Carbon Rodeo, the Greek Festival, the Junior Livestock Show and sale in Ferron, an event up Nine Mile Canyon, a couple high school reunions, and then Saturday night the big Monster Truck showdown. I don’t know about a lot of folks but when its 110 degrees in the shade I just can’t juggle my days and evenings to include all the above.
It is always a good idea to check with the tourism or travel bureau and the chamber of commerce before a weekend or date is finalized just to see what you are competing against at the same time.
I know what some of the planners or organizers are saying to themselves as they read this.
“We hold this event every year on this weekend and we aren’t changing,”
That is certainly a normal response but think of the general public and realize that often the gate ticket or admission price is important to the success of the activity. The more things there are to do, the less number of people will attend any one celebration or activity.
Just a reminder that an extended calendar is maintained at the chamber of commerce and at the travel bureau and once you have finalized your plans, give them a call and make sure your event is listed.
Another benefit to this is that the travel bureau even markets or advertises the activity through newspaper ads.
Another thought too. Not every activity needs to happen in the heat of midsummer. We have long and pleasant springs and falls, so let’s see if we can’t spread out some celebrations and help with building attendance at each of them.
Most of the events I have attended so far in this area are interesting, fun and festive and I don’t want to miss one of them. I am sure I am not the only one that has run into the dilemma of which to attend.
Maybe it’s time to rethink schedules for the good of everyone.
