Oh my God!
This is an expression we hear constantly on television, in the movies, on the street and in every day conversation. This, even though the user of the phrase is not aware, bothers people who believe in the teachings of the scriptures.
When we open the Bible to Exodus 20 verse seven (The Ten Commandments) we can see it says “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord thy God will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.”
Whether we believe it or not, we are constantly being judged by the way we speak. A person who uses profane language is immediately put in a class with the illiterate and undesirable.
A great man once said, “Profanity is a cheap way to try to make speech effective.” It is used as an expression of alarm, disgust, delight, the discovery of something new, a great loss, etc. In any case it is wrong in the sight of the Lord.
In churches we often hear words like “the Lord,” “Heavenly Father,” “the Saviour,” and other terms to avoid the constant use of “God,” “Jesus” and “Christ.” These are all very precious names, that shouldn’t be used in vain.
