Twentieth Century Achievement is one of 21 photos and exhibits of Gary Smith’s workdisplayed at CEU Prehistoric Museum. The photo essay is a display of images presented to the world in National Geographic, when Smith was at the height of his work. Smith contracted multiple sclerosis a few years after serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1969-72. He was also a ranger and a naturalist in the Sawtooth Mountains primitive area in Idaho and the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park. Smith served on the CEU museum’s board for years and helped develop the facility. Smith died in 1988 of the disease he became an activist about.
