Youth tackle football is alive and well in Carbon County. Carbon County Recreation’s youth football league expanded this year adding a fifth team because of a high increase in registrations. Nearly 100 boys in grades 5th- 7th are playing football this season.
Carbon County Recreation took the program over in the fall of 2004. There were five teams in 2004.
Registration numbers declined in 2005 and 2006 but have increased in each of the last two seasons. This year will mark the most boys registered in the program since CCR took over.
“We take a lot of pride in providing the highest quality programs to the public for the least amount of money,” said assistant director of recreation Frank Ori. “The increase in numbers has us very excited. We would like to continue to increase participation in all of our programs. But we are particularly happy that football numbers are higher.”
The youth football season is underway. Games are played on Tuesday evenings at Carbon High School and Saturday mornings at Mont Harmon Junior High. Each team plays an eight-game season. Teams include the 49ers, Eagles, Raiders, Vikings, and the new addition, the Dolphins. There are between 18 and 20 players per team.
