Carbon High seniors Whitney Williams, Tammy Harwood and Erika Potts watch intently as their team struggles to find a way to post a region win. One more trip to post season play would be a sweet reward for their final season. |
Beating Juan Diego earlier in the season gave the Dinos hope. But against a great team like the Soaring Eagles, hope wasn’t enough and the Carbon softball team dropped a pair by the score of 7-9 and 0-13 on Tuesday.
The Dinos jumped out quick with two in the first, but let the Souring Eagle back in by giving up five in the bottom of the first. Carbon tied it in the top of the second, but again Juan Diego reclaimed the lead with a pair of their own.
Behind 8-5, the Dinos rallied in the fourth to pull within one. Juan Diego tacked on their final run in the bottom half of the inning. Carbon had two more tries, but could not push another run across the plate and lost by a pair.
“Our girls came out and played competitively against a good team,” stated Coach Tony Pinedo. “We just ran out of juice.”
Whitney Williams had three hits in the game. Pinedo commented that most of his starters had hitsas the Dinos pounded out 11 hits in their loss.
But the second game was a different story. Carbon again let Juan Diego rack up five runs in the first. But this time, the bats of the Dinos were not coming through to keep them in the game. Carbon only had two hits in the final game against the Soaring Eagles.
The middle of the game did see Carbon playing some solid ball as they held Juan Diego to only another pair of runs. But in the sixth, the defense sputtered and gave Juan Diego the opening to post up six more to end the game with the 10 run rule.
“We can’t let up. We have three critical games coming up. We face North Sanpete this Thursday and then have a doubleheader against Delta. We need to win these,” stated Pinedo.
The games on Thursday and next Tuesday will all be home games for the Lady Dinos. The Thursday game begins at 3:30 p.m. and the doubleheader against the Rabbits will begin at 2:30 p.m.
