Tammy Harwood fields a hit from the Hawks. Harwood’s solid defense was big in the Dinos’ win.

A fair weather team they’re not. The Carbon softball team seems to play some of their best ball under the most adverse conditions. With snow, wind and sun to battle, the Dinos did just that as they held on to beat North Sanpete 7-6 to jump right back into the heart of region action.
The Hawk’s bats were hot in the first inning as they scored two with a home and a few base hits. The Dinos also hit the ball well in the first, but left a couple stranded with nothing to show for it.
In the second inning, Carbon then quickly sat the Hawks down scoreless and went to work to post up four of their own to take the lead. Carbon kept their bats going in the third and sent another three across the plate. After that the Hawks found a way to silence the Carbon offense.
Luckily for the Dinos, seven would be their magic number. They faltered a bit in the fourth, giving back three to North Sanpete to make it a 7-5 game. It stayed that way until a homerun from the Hawks pulled them within one in the seventh. It was Carbon’s defense that saved the day and they walked away with the win.

Whitney Williams prepares to punt the ball on Thursday. Rain, snow and blinding sun annoyed the Dinos and they annoyed North Sanpete and took the win.

Coach Pinedo could not say enough about his team’s effort. “Erika Potts played some tremendous defense. Tammy Harwood made a diving catch in left that saved some runs. Sarah Norton made an incredible leaping catch of a throw that had sailed on Erika (Potts) and tagged out the runner as she flew by. Paige (Pinedo) knocked down several hits up the middle and threw out the runners. The defensive effort from the team was huge and allowed us to win the game when our offense sputtered after the third.”
So now Carbon has two big games looming against Delta. They must win one to even head to post season play. Winning both gives them a shot to move up all the way to third place. If Delta loses both to Carbon and then beats North Sanpete, Carbon would take third. Lots of “ifs” but first it will be up to the Dinos to do their part and win on Tuesday.
Game time will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Carbon High softball field.
