Carbon High long distance phenom Melanie Madsen did what she does best at a May 1 Brigham Young University Invitational: run.
Madsen was one of several of the state’s top runners to receive an invite to the prestigious meet. Only the top 10 athletes of each school classification were allowed to compete.
Madsen placed16th out of the top 30 runners in 3A, 4A and 5A track.
She also placed third in 3A girls with a state-qualifying time of 11:59.
The entire Carbon track team also made a strong showing at an Emery qualifying meet on April 28, despite poor weather weakening finish times for all participants.
Madsen won the 3200 meter run and placed second in the 800 and 200 meter run.
Allie Stewart also overcame the strong wind and cold temperatures to place first in the girls high jump and qualify for the state tournament.
Amie and Bryan Stewart continued the family run. Amie placed second in the long jump, third in the 100 meter hurdles and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.
Bryan swept the 110 and 300 meter boys hurdles, easily placing first in both.
Maquette Potts placed second in the high jump and Brittney Banning place third in the 100 meter, third in the high jump and fourth in the long jump.
Elizabeth Brooks ran her best time of the year in the 1600 meter, placing second.
Jacob Burrows took the 800 meter race by five seconds, despite a strong head wind that arose during the event.
David Goodrich and brother Paul Goodrich fought to the finish in the 1600 meter run. Older brother David, a junior, came out one-hundreth of a second ahead of Paul, a freshman. They took second and third respectively.
Paul Goodrich also placed third in the 800 meters.
Dustin Hurst maintains his position on the top of all Region 8 shot put competitors, placing first.
Derrick Potter placed third in the boys 110 meter hurdles.
Randy Jones placed fourth in the javelin and Kerry Powell had a fourth place time in the 3200 meter run.
The region tournament has been moved from Delta High to North Sanpete for Wednesday, May 5. Competition will begin at 9 a.m.
The region tournament will be followed by state at BYU on May 14 and 15.
