2017 The Year in Review | Guilty verdicts in double killing

Seth Gordon Peterson had several court dates in 2017, beginning on January 3 and continuing throughout the year. He stood accused of murder in the shooting deaths of his mother and brother two months earlier at a ranch near the Hiawatha Road.
The 25 year old was arrested and booked into jail on charges of Aggravated Murder, Attempted Aggravated Murder, Aggravated Robbery and Failure to Stop at the Command of Police following a grizzly incident that left 45-year old Susan Peterson, and 23-year old James Peterson dead. Two hunting rifles were found at the scene.
Peterson was bound over for trial after entering pleas of not guilty on all charges in April. After a scheduling conference and a pretrial conference in June, a jury trial was set for December 11. Prosecutors said they would not seek the death penalty.
During the trial, defense attorneys said Peterson was experiencing a methamphetamine-induced psychosis and was not responsible for his actions. But the jury was not convinced and after three days of testimony, found Peterson guilty on one charge of aggravated murder, a reduced charge of manslaughter, attempted aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, and failure to stop at the command of police.
Sentencing has been set for February 7.
