Three Carbon Cal Ripken Teams heading to Regionals
State Champions
Get ready for…
Carbon County is now home to three Cal Ripken State Champion teams for the 2017 season, after hosting the Southern Utah State Tournament last week. The 9U, 10U and 11U Carbon teams each earned the title of “champions” of their respective divisions at the conclusion of last week’s tournament, and will have the opportunity to move on to the Regional Tournaments later this month.
The 9U Carbon Blue team was 3-0 after pool play, and entered the tournament bracket as the number one seed. However, Carbon lost to Roosevelt and had to fight back from the loser’s bracket. After making its way through the bracket, Carbon faced Beaver, who they had to beat twice in order to be declared State Champions. Carbon defeated Beaver 11-0 on Thursday night, and on Friday morning came back with another crushing win, 16-1, for the championship victory. The 9U team will move on to the Regional Tournament, which will be held in West Valley City, Utah beginning July 17.
The 10U Carbon Blue team was named State Champions and reached the Regional Tournament unconventionally. After cruising through pool play with a 3-0 record, and defeating Richfield, Emery and Vernal in bracket play, Carbon faced South Sevier in the championship game Thursday. Carbon was down to its finally opportunity to make a comeback, trailing 7-2. If South Sevier won, the teams would have to play again, as Carbon came in undefeated. However, South Sevier was forced to forfeit with one out in the sixth inning due to pitcher ineligibility. A pitcher who had already thrown the maximum number of pitches allowed entered the game, causing South Sevier to have to forfeit. The 10U team was named State Champions and will move on to regionals, which will be held in Visalia, California beginning July 17.
The 11U Carbon Blue team entered the bracket undefeated, after going 3-0 in pool play. The team defeated Vernal in the championship game 17-8. For this Carbon team it is the fourth State Championship in a row, as the team has previously won as 8-, 9-, and 10-year-olds. The 11U team will move on to the Regional Tournament held in Long Beach, California beginning July 17.
The 8U Carbon Blue team finished in second place, after a hard-fought championship game against Roosevelt. Carbon also had a 12U team competing at the tournament, as well as Carbon White teams in the 9U, 10U and 11U divisions.
