CHS band continues to blow everyone away

The band instructor at Carbon High is Ms. Jensen.  After a difficult year last year, she is optimistic for the year that is upon us. Last year was difficult because the changes made to the school required extra work for all. These included new faculty, getting Chromebooks, and switching to a 5 by 5 schedule. Amidst the difficulty, CHS Band had a very productive year. Region Solo and Ensemble last year was held at Payson High School, and many students participated in it. Ms. Jensen said, “15-20 students went to state and a lot received ‘Superior’ ratings, which is very hard to do.” State was held in Orem. Something Ms. Jensen said she enjoyed about last year was the opportunity to play more advanced music than other schools in which she has taught.
When asked about changes that would be made this year, she said, “There is always something new to try, and little changes here and there will be made to improve.” Mostly she will be interpreting solo ensemble comments received from last year into this year. Canyon View is where Solo and Ensemble will be held this year. Ms. Jensen has brought back the marching band for the first time in about 20 years. There aren’t currently as many participants as what she would like, about 35 students, but she thinks that once students see what it’s about they will want to join. The marching band’s theme is “Pirates Life for Me” and all their music will be from The Pirates of the Caribbean. Mr. Sweeney, a history teacher at Carbon High, helped with getting this program back on track.  They have marched in parades and are preparing a field show for home football games.
