CHS Wrestlers take down North Sanpete in season finale

Dinos pick up several early pinfall victories to run away with 58-12 win in final match before region meet
With only two weeks left before the region meet at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, the Carbon High Wrestling team was looking for a way to finish the season on a strong note.
The Dinos quickly accomplished that goal as they picked up several early pinfall victories en route to a 58-12 season finale victory over North Sanpete on Thursday evening at the Carbon High Gymnasium.
Carbon High Head Coach Steve Woodhouse said he was pleased with the effort that the team showed on senior night against a North Sanpete team that was better than the final score indicated.
“Overall our team did very well to get the win,” Woodhouse said. “Our kids have been stepping up and performing really well and that helps with region in just a few weeks.”
Woodhouse credited the Dino’s win on getting key early wins in the lower weight classes that helped set the tone for the match.
“Any time you can get a couple of wins in a row it helps shift momentum in your favor,” he said.
One of the biggest reactions from the home crowd came during CHS wrestler Triton Abeyta match midway through the evening. Abeyta, wrestling at 126 lbs, was taking on a North Sanpete wrestler that placed at State last season. Abeyta used a head whip maneuver and was able to pin his opponent’s shoulders to the mat picking up the victory and getting a hearty applause from the crowd.
“Triton had a standout performance for us,” Woodhouse said.
Other CHS wrestlers continued the momentum through the final matches picking up several victories from weight classes 152, 160, 170, 195, 220, and at heavyweight.
Now with no more duels to deal with, Carbon High can now focus on just practicing, healing and getting that last bit of rest before facing tough competition at the region meet on Feb. 6-7.
“Our kids are getting better at the right time,” Woodhouse said. “We are improving in a lot of areas I know they’ll be ready for region.”
