Early deficit makes difference in Carbon’s 41-13 loss to Grantsville

By Sun Advocate

For the second straight week the Carbon High football team fell behind early and was unable to overcome an early deficit, this time falling to Grantsville 41-13 on the road on Friday night.
Grantsville scored on their first two drives of the first quarter to take an early 14-0 lead in their Homecoming Night game. They added another touchdown early in the second quarter to push the lead to 21-0.
In their loss to North Sanpete at home last week, Carbon fell behind 20-0 at halftime and trailed by as many as 27 points in the second half.
Carbon finally got on the board after a snap on a Grantsville punt attempt went over the punter’s head allowing CHS defensive end Peyton Fausett to recover the ball in the end zone for the score to make it 21-6.
The Dino offense drove the ball down the field on their next possession but they were unable to convert on a fourth down deep in Grantsville territory.
Carbon opened the third quarter with a promising drive into Grantsville’s end of the field but it was cut short after a bad snap and fumble led to a turnover.
Grantsville added two more touchdowns to increase the lead to 34-6 midway through the fourth quarter.
Carbon’s offense finally broke through as quarterback Jarod Lessar connected with wide receiver Garrett Blanc on a 59-yard touchdown pass to make it 34-13.
Grantsville was able to add another touchdown late in the fourth quarter as they pushed the lead back to 41-13.
With the loss, Carbon is now 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in 3A North play. Carbon will face another difficult test next week when they host Morgan High on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Carbon High Football Field.
