South Sevier squeaks past CHS on senior night

Dinos make late comeback to take lead, but South Sevier spoils the night with decisive pin in final match
In their final home match of the season, the Carbon High wrestling team made a late match comeback and held a five-point lead heading into the final match.
But South Sevier wasn’t about to go down quietly, as they used a final match win to squeak past Carbon 39-38 in a match on Thursday evening on senior night.
“It’s always exciting for it to come down to the final match,” said CHS head coach Steve Woodhouse. “Our kids fought hard throughout the entire match but we came up just short in the end.”
The Dinos were coming off a 46-16 road win over North Sanpete in a region matchup on Wednesday evening.
Three Carbon seniors, Dakota Nichols, Jesse Collins and AJ Barnett, wrestled in their final home match for the Dinos. Woodhouse credited the seniors with helping to provide leadership and stability for a team that has undergone a lot of changes over the past few years.
“They’ve matured so much over their careers,” Woodhouse said. “They have been our team captains and they’ve been good leaders and good examples for our team.”
While the Dinos would have liked to come away with a win in their final home match, Woodhouse said the result shouldn’t hurt the team going forward. He was pleased with their efforts and is hoping that the momentum from their last few matches will carry over into the final two meets before heading to the region meet in Richfield.
“The team has come a long way since the start of the season,” he said. “We’ll rebound from this match and get better with the region meet coming up in early February.”
Woodhouse said he will continue to emphasize key points including working on conditioning, taking their time in matches to find an opening and just continuing to work hard as the long season begins to wind down for the Dinos.
The Dinos will travel to North Sevier on Tuesday, Jan. 28 and to Richfield on Dec. 30. The Dinos will return to Richfield on Feb. 7-8 for the region wrestling meet.
“We just need to continue preparing for the region meet and then the state tournament,” he said.
The Dinos are hoping to do well at region and qualify as many wrestlers on the team for the state tournament.
