Dino volleyball serves up wins as new season begins

By Sun Advocate

The Carbon Dinos have resumed their winning ways. Last weekend they placed third at the Tournament of Champions meet against larger 5A schools. Then on Tuesday in their home opener they quickly dispatched Union in a three game sweep 25-13, 25-14, and 25-23.
The Dinos headed north to Skyline High last weekend to play in the tough tournament featuring some of the best volleyball in the state. With the exception of a match early in the tournament against Layton, the team kept each game close, no matter win or lose.
Eight grueling games gave the team much needed competition in which to work out the early season bugs in their game. Coach Cristin Johnson was a bit frustrated with the errors her team committed in the tournament. Many times it was the errors that let Carbon beat themselves. Still, all-in -all the team held their own and put up an impressive showing against the larger schools.
As the first of the state rankings come out, the Dinos find themselves number two in 3A behind their arch nemesis, Morgan again this season. But with the guidance of setter Julia Potts and a core of returning starters, Carbon is looking to a solid season.
On Tuesday, they showed the home crowd their potential as they dispatched Union in three. Johnson calmed their pre-game jitters and told them to play loose. That is exactly what they came out and did. The Dinos dominated the first game and easily went up 1-0 in the match.
Union regrouped and made a game of it early on in the second game, but quickly the Dinos settled down and finished it off to take a 2-0 lead. But in the third, the team made several service errors to keep Union in the match. The Cougars smelled a win and tried to steal the momentum away from Carbon as the were up 22-17 late in the game.
But the Dinos did some momentum stealing of their own and charged back in the game to tie it at 23 before putting it away. The brooms came out in the stands as their fans celebrated the sweep.
Johnson praised the team effort and the way the squad didn’t give up in the final game. “They could have just quit and said we’ll get them in the next game, but they knew what they wanted to do and got the job done.” She also complimented the play of Karlee Martino in the match.
So far this year, Britni Greenwood is leading the team in kills with 122 on the season. Julia Potts and Cherelle Julian lead the team is service aces and Britteny Gustas has 111 digs.
Carbon is 5-4 on the season. They head to Vernal to play Uintah on Thursday.
