Governor Jon Huntsman recently announced that the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food along with the commerce officials are actively monitoring and analyzing gas pump prices at locations across the state.
According to the latest report released by AAA Utah, the state’s average per gallon pump price for unleaded gasoline registered the third highest in the nation.
At the local level, the pump prices in Carbon County have registered between $4.07 and $4.16 per gallon for regular self-serve gasoline.
At the national level, the average gas price reported by the news media during last weekend registered significantly less than $4 per gallon at pumps across the United States.
“Gas prices are hitting everyone hard. As the rest of the country is seeing some relief from exorbitant gas prices, gas retailers in Utah have not shown Utahns a commensurate decrease at the pumps here at home,” pointed out Huntsman.
“We are asking these state agencies to monitor the situation within their enforcement powers to make sure Utahns are not being taken advantage of,” continued the governor.
To accomplish the consumer protection objective, Huntsman indicated that Utah’s food and agriculture department will continue to monitor gasoline sales through the agency’s weights and measures program.
The goal focuses on ensuring that consumers statewide are receiving the right amount of motor vehicle fuel at the self-serve pumps.
In addition, the state’s commerce department will review complaints of deceptive sales practices, explained the governor.
In the event suspicious practices are detected, the state agencies will refer the incidents to Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff for investigation.
