Former Price resident, Jim New, was recently recognized by the Chair Academy as an “International Exemplary Leader.” New, the Associate Dean of Applied Industrial Technologies at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nev., received the award at the Academy’s 14th Annual International Leadership Conference on March 4.
According to Gary Filan, the Chair Academy’s executive director, the organization is committed to training and recognizing community college leaders from around the world who demonstrate exemplary leadership practices, dedication to their institutions, the students they serve, and the faculty and staff they lead. Associate Dean New recently completed the Chair Academy’s two-year training program in Phoenix, Ariz. He was nominated for the award by his colleagues at TMCC.
New is a 1975 graduate of Carbon High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Utah State University in 1991 and completed a Masters of Business Information System degree from USU in 1998. Before moving to Reno, New worked for 11 years at the College of Eastern Utah in Price where he developed CEU’s Graphic Arts program.
New was hired as a Computer Technologies instructor at TMCC in 1998. Upon receiving tenure, he was elected by his peers as chair for that department. In that role, he launched a comprehensive review of the technical curriculum which resulted in extensive revisions in all computer technology degree emphases. He also coordinated two simultaneous exhaustive program reviews for the Information Technology and Office Technology disciplines. The resulting reports and program recommendations earned accolades from Nevada higher education administrators.
In 2004, New was appointed Associate Dean of the Applied Industrial Technologies division. In this position, he supervises all functions of 12 different vocational/technical departments, from automotive to welding. He is also the administrator for the TMCC/IGT Applied Technologies Center, which houses the industrial technologies in a facility several miles away from the main campus. He has worked closely with industry leaders from across northern Nevada to develop new programs in manufacturing, geothermal and alternative energy, construction safety, certified building inspection, and certified water plant operations.
