Each year the annual Womens Conference at the College of Eastern Utah names a woman of the year and this year is no exception.
At ceremonies on April 1 Joyce Jeanselme Pierce was given that very title at the 26th version of the conference.
Pierce is a graduate of the Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing and has devoted time to her profession for over 40 years. She is presently employed as Director of Nursing at the Southeastern Utah Health District which covers the counties of Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan.
She is a very giving person. After a full days work she can often be seen visiting former patients, neighbors and friends who are in some kind of need. When she hears of illness or sadness in a family she is one of the first to offer help along with her smile and joyful personality.
Not only is she there for her immediate family, but for the last 10 years she has been the primary caregiver to her ailing mother.
As a volunteer for 15 years she has been a relentless participant for the cancer fund raising drive in the county. The drive sells daffodils and she serves as the treasurer for that fund.
She has often spent the entire night at the site of the Relay for Life cancer drive working with other volunteers who through their efforts have netted a total of $50,989 during the drives from 1989 to 2003. She acts as the treasurer for the event.
In years past she has served as a Cub Scout den mother and many other activities in which her children were involved.
She has been active in her church and has been a visiting teacher for 35 years.
She is the treasurer for the American Cancer Society in Carbon County and the Utah Nursing Directors Association.
Each year the Women’s Conference gives an award to an outstanding woman in Carbon County. Generally those that receive the award have a combination of professional, volunteer and family achievements that make them outstanding in the community. Those considered for the awards are nominated by individuals and organizations across the Castle Valley area.
The award was presented to her in a special ceremony by Val Himonas.
