Ross Harrison
PRICE/SALT LAKE CITY – Ross J. Harrison, age 78, our beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully March 30, 2005, in Salt Lake City at the home of his daughter.
He was born Oct. 21, 1926, in Price to James Alfred and Conda Nielson Harrison. He married Betty Kennick May 22, 1946, and cherished their 36 years together until her death in 1982. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Ross truly loved his three children, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He attended Carbon High School and graduated in 1944. He attended and played basketball at Carbon College prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps during World War II . Ross later worked for Nabisco in Salt Lake City where he was an accomplished salesman. While in Salt Lake he became an exceptional Little League coach, winning the championship for three consecutive years. He later returned to Carbon County as general manager of the Country Club, reuniting with his many family and friends, whom he dearly loved.
He will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He instilled a sense of honesty and integrity in his family and all those with whom he associated.
He is survived by three children, Scott and Jeanne Harrison of Orem, Michael Harrison, and Diane and Steve Taylor, all of Salt Lake City; seven grandchildren, Brent and Priscilla Harrison, Blake and Amy Harrison, McKenzie and Greg Deakins, Devin Harrison, Jennifer Harrison, Michael Harrison, Megan Harrison; and five great-grandchildren. Also survived by brothers, Lloyd and Bonita Harrison of Price; Kent L. Harrison of Provo; long-time companion, Hazel Davidson and her family, Jim, Pam and Sam.
Graveside services were Saturday, April 2, in the Price City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary
The family would like to thank the Veterans Hospital and CareSource Hospice for their fine and dignified care of our beloved dad and a special thanks to Melissa (his health care aid) of Haven Home Health.
In lieu of flowers and because of Dad’s love of children, Ross suggested donations be made to Shriner’s Hospital in his name.
The family would like to invite friends and family to join them in remembering Ross at a luncheon held at the Carbon Country Club following the graveside services.
Alice Pantelakis
EAST CARBON/PLEASANT HOPE, Mo. – Our loving mother and grandmother, Alice Opel Pantelakis, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2005, at St. Johns Hospital in Missouri.
She was born Jan. 6, 1928, in Denver, Colo., to Robert and Minnie Myrtle Yager. Married John K. Pantelakis Sr. on May 9, 1954, and together they had six children.
Alice and her husband were longtime resident of Carbon County and owners and operators of Miner’s Club in East Carbon. In 2002 she left the area and moved to Pleasant Hope, Mo., to be near and cared for by her daughter.
In her younger days she was active with her children, sports and outdoor activities. She loved camping, fishing, hunting and trapping. She had a great passion for gardening, especially caring for her flowers. In her later years she enjoyed crocheting and quilting. Alice had a great love for bible study, visiting, and playing card games for hours with her neighbors. She touched the hearts of many and her memory will live on forever.
Survived by six children, Bonnie (Bob) Mansanarez, Marina, Calif.; Linda White, Salt Lake City; John K. Pantelakis Jr., East Carbon; Nick Pantelakis, Helper; Tony (Denice) Pantelakis, Springville; Kathy (Danny) Van Nostrand, Buffalo, Mo.; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four sisters; and two brothers. Preceded in death by husband, John K. Pantelakis; brother, David Yager; sister, Mary Guligson; and parents.
Funeral service, Wednesday, April 6, 11 a.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday one hour prior to service.
Interment, Price City cemetery.
Glen Downard
PRICE – Glen Eldwood Downard, age 77, passed away March 30, 2005, at his home after a long illness.
Born Aug. 2, 1927, in Price to George Leo and Ida Warren Downard. Married Shirley Rae Brundage April 25, 1952 in Elko, Nev.; their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
Glen served in the U.S. Navy during Korea and World War II. Upon returning to Price he went back to college and later became an electrical contractor where he wired many buildings and homes in Carbon County. He later went to work for the College of Eastern Utah doing electrical maintenance and he retired in 1991.
Glen was a former member of the Price 1st Ward Bishopric where he loved helping with scouting. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren.
Survived by wife, Shirley Downard, Price; sons, Bill (Wendi) Downard, Castle Dale; Douglas (Dawna) Downard, Huntington; brother, Robert “Bob” (LaVern) Downard, Orem; special daughter, Gloria Yazzie, Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; infant daughter; daughter, Donna Irene Jackson; granddaughter, Misti Irene Downard; brother and sister-in-law, Warren and Yvonne Downard; and infant brother.
Funeral service Tuesday, April 5, 11 a.m., Price LDS Stake Center, 150 South 500 East. Family will be at church Tuesday one hour prior to service.
Interment, Price City cemetery.
Fern Hersh
EAST CARBON – Fern Lewis Hersh, age 76, passed away March 31, 2005, in Orem.
She was born Oct. 11, 1928, in Emery to Robert Timmis and Christy Caroline Rasmussen Lewis. She married Lowell Guy Hersh Sept. 14, 1946 in Price. Later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
As an active member of the LDS Church she served in various callings. She excelled in bowling and was the secretary of the East Carbon league where she played on three different bowling teams and participated in the WIBC national bowling tournaments. Her first love was her family, laboring tirelessly to meet the needs of her beloved husband, children and grandchildren, by whom she will be deeply missed. Her most favorite thing to do was dance with her husband, Guy.
Fern is survived by husband, Guy of East Carbon; daughter, Karen and husband, Bryan T. Winnovich of Mountain View, Calif.; sons, Robert Lowell Hersh of Wellington; Stanley Guy Hersh of East Carbon; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one on the way. Also survived by brother, Morris Robert and wife, Geraldine M. Lewis of Murray; and brother, Ralph Andrew and wife, Peggy P. Lewis of Denver, Colo. Preceded in death by sister, Ester Lewis.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 5, 11 a.m. In the East Carbon LDS Chapel. The family will be at the church one hour prior to services.

Ann Eccli
EAST CARBON – Ann Eccli, age 93, passed away peacefully April 1, 2005.
She was born Feb. 19, 1912 near Arma, Kan., to George and Jennie Rath Burns. Married Premo Eccli Dec. 1, 1933, in Frontenac, Kan. He preceded her in death Jan. 24, 1995.
She was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
Survived by son, Robert Eccli of Price; daughter, Joanne and husband, Robert Keogh of Albert Lea, Minn.; three sisters; two brothers; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; son, Jimmy; husband, three brothers; and five sisters.
Burial will be Wednesday, April 6, at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Frontenac, Kan. Services and arrangements under the direction of Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay, Frontenac, Kan.
James Gunderson
PRICE/CHESTER, Calif. – Longtime dentist, Dr. James Ray Gunderson, age 82, passed from this life following a long battle with cancer, Friday evening, March 25, 2005, at his residence in Chester, Calif.
Born Sept. 5, 1922, to Derrell and Irene Gunderson in Price where he was also raised and received his general education, Dr. Gunderson graduated from Carbon High School as a member of the Class of 1939. He had just recently had the honor of attending his 60th class reunion. While attending high school he excelled in boxing and swimming.
Dr. Gunderson joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and became a member of the Seabees. His unit took part in the cleanup and reconstruction of Pearl Harbor following the Japanese bombing of the Hawaiian Islands. He served his country with honor and bravery throughout the Pacific Theatre during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945. While serving his country, Dr. Gunderson rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant, became an expert marksman and fought his way to Fleet Champion as a Golden Glove Boxing competitor.
Following Dr. Gunderson’s discharge from the military he went on to continue his education where he attended San Diego State and later graduated with his Doctorate in Dentistry from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1957. He relocated to Escondito, Calif., in 1958 where he practiced dentistry before moving to Chester, Calif., in 1978. He opened his practice in Chester, Calif., and continued to serve patients until retiring in 1986.
Dr. Gunderson was a member of the Escondito Elks Lodge where he held numerous chairs, the Chester Lions Club, was a member of the Flying Samaritan’s, a group of doctors who volunteered their talent and supplies to help the needy of Mexico, and was an active member of E. Clampus Vitus Vigilante Chapter 8 of Chester, Calif. Dr. Gunderson was an avid sportsman who especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed reading, and was an accomplished historian who studied World War II from all sides involved, a true scientist at heart he enjoyed studying geology.
Dr. Gunderson is survived by four children; sons, Michael of Aptos, Calif.; Karl of McMinnville, Ore.; Christian of Jefferson, Ore.; daughter, Mary Gunderson of Grants Pass, Ore.; and seven lovely grandchildren. He is preceded in death by son, Richard in 1982; brother, Derrell Robert Gunderson; and sister, Riley Gene.
At Dr. Gunderson’s request, following cremation, no services will be held. Private disposition of his cremains will take place at a later date.
